Types of Power Trowel Blades

There are three types of trowel blades that you might purchase for your power trowel:

• Float blade. The float blade is the blade that is used to flatten the concrete after it has poured, eliminate lumps, and encourage the concrete to bleed. Float blades help create a level surface.
• Finishing blade. A finishing blade is a blade that is used to finish the concrete once it's been floated with the floating blade. The finishing blade creates a smooth, attractive finish that gives your concrete project its attractive sheen.
• Combo blade. The combo blade is a blade that both floats and finishes. Combo blades have an edge that's curved upward for floating on one side, and a flat edge for finishing on the other side.

Choosing the Right Trowel Blade

Choosing the right trowel blade for your task is important. Unless you select a combo blade, the right trowel blade will depend on where you are in the process. Float blades are used first to help level and smooth concrete, and finishing blades are used second to fully smooth the concrete. If you have a combo blade, you can use it for both tasks.

Proper Technique for Concrete Finishing

To finish concrete, start by smoothing the concrete in the slab until it's evenly applied throughout. Next, screed the concrete to level it further. Float the concrete with a flat trowel to encourage it to bleed water, then wait for the surface water to evaporate.

Once the surface water has evaporated, it's time to edge, groove and float the slab. Use the finishing trowel when you're done, and then use a concrete broom to rough up the surface. This gives the surface just a little bit of texture, so it will be non-slip.
